A hidden gem below the Ungasan Clifftop Resort, Sundays Beach Club can only be accessed by tram, a two-minute descent down a cleft between two lush green hillsides to the white-sand beach below.
Just steps from the luxury resort’s main pool and lobby, the tram awaits, ready to take you to the Sundays Beach Club. As you climb into the cabin, you can see the beach club’s thatched roofs below, looking like tiny bungalows from this vantage point. As you make the almost-vertical descent, bungalows grow larger and the clear, aquamarine water grows closer. When you step out, you enter the round bar, where a team of hosts welcome you with genuine delight. On my visit, I was offered a table in the main dining area, adjacent to its semi-open kitchen. The rule here is “first-come, first-served,” which also applies for the parasols and sun loungers. Thus, it is best to come early if you want to guarantee one of the coveted spots at the front. Further to the east is Sunday Beach Club’s mini-lawn platform, where you will find the best combination of cool shade and open views.
Above the plush dining area, you will find several hidden massage bungalows, with talented staff ready to take your body to another level of relaxation in this serene setting.
At the end are Sundays’ Bale, two raised seaside huts that offer elevated views and the ultimate private space for a full-day retreat. The lapping waves just reach the base of the platform at high tide, and low tides reveal rock pools and a clear lagoon containing interesting collections of tropical marine life to explore. The 165m stretch of sand is walled between rock faces on each side, and is well supervised.
Treating myself to some self love, I enjoy my 29th massage in Indonesia; it seems fitting that this one on the beach next to a temple celebrating life. The massage leaves me feeling free and centered, ready to explore more of this amazing planet.
